The Triangle Shirtwaist Co. was a large company that made shirtwaists (a type of shirt). The Triangle Shirtwaist Co., however, was not a safe environment for the following reasons: there were not enough exits, that the doors were “locked
to prevent pilfering”, the gas lamps, people smoking, fire escape ladders were way
too short, the doors opened inward, the staircases had not exit to the roof,
the wages were low, no benefits, if one was not at work one was either fired or lost money, they monitor how long you go to the bathroom, the girls are not
going to school (affects all of society), the water was of bad quality, there
was no provided food, and they had to live in cheap conditions, often with many
other people.
The tragedy that occurred at the Triangle Shirtwaist Co. was a pivotal point in labor regulations for men, women and children. The "labor code" that came out after the Triangle Shirtwaist fire was the most advanced in US history. New York state created a factory commission that developed a factory reform program, which involved 56 regulations about fire escapes, unsafe machinery, wages and working hours for women and children. This affected women's rights because of the regulations that were put in place, even though a woman still only makes 91 cents for every dollar that a man makes.
